In this blog I cover why guest blogging should be a key element of your content marketing strategy.
Yes, guest blogging helps for SEO but that isn’t everything
A guest blog is when you write a post that will be featured on someone else’s website. You will often hear SEO experts talking of the importance of guest blogging for getting a better Domain Authority (DA). These work like points for your website which help improve your Google rankings. The more links you have to your website from other sites (ideally higher ranking ones), the better your DA will be.
This is all true. Bit dull though! I’m all about organic content and I think guest blogging can bring so many other benefits.
Think ahead - guest posts needs to work for the audience reading it
If you are featuring guest blogs on your own site, it allows you to bring your audience a different topic from a subject matter expert. On my own blog I have featured posts from other fabulous business owners about SEO, Pinterest and outsourcing, all topics outside of my own skillset. As Anne from the Web Design Unlimited shared when we were discussing this on Instagram, a guest blog allows her to feature posts from complimentary businesses to her own audience and bring more depth to her site.
On the flip side, when you are offering your expertise to other websites, you are bringing your message, value or sparkle to a completely different audience that otherwise may not have come across you. It is an opportunity to demonstrate your expertise and talk to a new ideal client without once having to enter into sales pitch territory.
Nicky Raby, a personal brand coach, recommends selecting a platform or community where people are in the right place for your message and ready to receive it. To put this into context, anyone who knows me will be aware of my current sourdough obsession (my son questioned recently if it was really necessary to do sourdough yorkies?), but it wouldn’t make sense for me to go to one of my sourdough crushes on Instagram and propose a guest blog on the value of content marketing.
What other benefits can guest blogging bring?
I love guest blogging as it’s a great opportunity to get to know other businesses in your field and how they work. It has allowed me to get to know people beyond the social media platform and build a stronger business relationship.
Content! Build up a conversation with a new audience by re-purposing that content on your social channels and tagging the place where your guest blog is published. Use this as an opportunity to create a dialogue with people you may not have come across before.
Guest blogging demonstrates that you are open to collaborating with different types of business. It is a great way of showing you know your value and ave the confidence to share it and increase your visibility. This may bring further opportunities such as speaking, Lives or even workshops for that audience. One thing is for sure, you might never know until you start to put yourself out there.
